Talk 1: Your Voice In RA Research: What Research Has Learned From Patients About Pain, Fatigue, And Independence
Susan Goodman, MD
(Director, Integrative Rheumatology and Orthopedics Center)
By partnering with people with RA, researchers can better understand the outcomes that matter most to them. This ensures our research on symptoms and remission is relevant to patient experience. This presentation will explore our ongoing research and its direct impact on RA treatment and care.
Talk II: The Different Faces of Pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis
Charis Meng, MD
(HSS Rheumatologist)

Precision Medicine In RA: What Can Your Joint Tissues Reveal, And Can It Guide Treatment?
Melanie Smith, MD, PhD
(Director, Inflammatory Arthritis Center)
One of the big research areas in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is focused on precision medicine. This area of research looks at whether doctors can predict which medication a specific patient will respond to, so that they can quickly get their pain under control and curb disease progression.
Now, research teams, including those at HSS, are looking to determine if the types of cells present in joint tissue can predict which medication will work for a patient. This talk will provide an overview of advances in precision medicine and current research being conducted at HSS and around the world.

Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking?: Patient And Physician Thoughts On RA Treatment And Decision-Making
Presenters TBD
How do rheumatologists and patients think about RA treatment? How do they decide which medications are most effective, how to monitor progress, how to address side-effects, when to add other modalities, and when it’s time to change or adjust medications?
This talk will take some of the mystery out of these decisions and cover factors that should be part of effective patient- provider discussions.
