HSS Prosthetics & Orthotics Service

Founded in 1863, the Prosthetics and Orthotics Service at HSS is dedicated to providing patients with the most up-to-date limb replacement and bracing devices available. Services include a comprehensive, world-class facility capable of fitting, crafting, modifying, fabricating, and delivering prefabricated and custom prosthetic limbs, scoliosis braces, and orthotic appliances which are tailor-made for any orthopedic condition. These services are provided by our contracted vendors on-site and locally near our hospital locations.

Experts in HSS P&O are certified by the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics, Inc. (ABC), and the facility itself is an Accredited Facility. The products they provide are meant to correct, protect, assist, and support various appendages and other afflicted locations around the body.

HSS P&O maintains its own self-contained onsite fabrication laboratory to ensure the quality of each custom-made device is consistently excellent from start to finish. Additionally, HSS P&O performs consultations for HSS physicians and maintains a prosthetics and orthotics clinic at HSS every week.

Chrysta Irolla was first introduced to the field of orthotics and prosthetics while pursuing her bioengineering degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Through UPenns global biomedical service program, Chrysta got her first hands on experience providing devices for pediatric patients with CP and adult patients with transtibial amputations. She went on to earn her Master of Science in Engineering Design and Innovation from Northwestern University and her Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics from The Georgia Institute of Technology.

Chrysta did her residencies at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago and at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is Certified as a Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO) by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics, Inc (ABC).

Chrysta was a clinician at UCSF for over 12 years and during that time served as a clinical manager of their pediatric division, the departmental research chair, and residency mentor. While at UCSF, Chrysta become a pediatric specialist and cultivated her clinical expertise seeing a high concentration of patients with; cerebral palsy, clubfoot, scoliosis, spina bifida and pectus carinatum. Outside of clinic, her interest in running led her to participate in a specialty clinic instructing runners on appropriate orthotic and shoe selection.

Chrysta joined the Hospital for Special Surgery to become the Director of Prosthetics and Orthotics, bringing her expertise to help guide and grow the department. Her responsibilities include clinical oversight and direction of HSS contracted Prosthetics and Orthotic providers, and services provided at HSS regional offices.

Chrysta has a strong interest in clinical research and is currently involved with several projects and considered to be a subject matter expert in orthotic management for pectus carinatum.

Chrystas’ experience makes her uniquely qualified to work with patients with cerebral palsy, scoliosis, pectus carinatum, clubfoot, spina bifida, orthopaedic injuries, running injuries and complex limb reconstruction.

The Ellen and Joe Wright Prosthetic and Orthotic Fund

The Ellen and Joe Wright Prosthetic and Orthotic Fund makes it possible for pediatric patients to receive the custom and non-custom devices they need. These patients seek care for conditions including, but not limited to, spina bifida, arthritis, limb length discrepancy, cerebral palsy, and ACL injury.

The demands on the fund continue to grow as insurers place further restrictions on coverage, and delays in payment may occur even for those devices that are covered. The Wright Fund bridges this gap for those who need our services most.

The Ellen and Joe Wright Prosthetic and Orthotic Fund has improved the lives of patients by helping them maintain and enhance their mobility and quality of life. We anticipate that the demand for these services will continue to grow, and it is gratifying to know that through the Wright Fund, Hospital for Special Surgery has the resources to help those we care for get the prosthetic and orthotic devices they need.
