HSS is offering one fellowship position in Shoulder Surgery. The fellow will gain broad exposure to the full spectrum of shoulder pathology and treatment, from arthroscopy to arthroplasty, training alongside a faculty that includes several leaders in the field — among them two former presidents of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES).
Clinical responsibilities span both office and operating room coverage, with a typical week including two days in the OR, two days in the office, and one day dedicated to research. The fellow will have ample research opportunities and is expected to be productive in this area, with access to the HSS Shoulder Arthroplasty Registry and a dedicated shoulder biomechanics laboratory staffed by a collaborating PhD and research engineer.

Fellows are required to attend all conferences. Wednesday's Shoulder Conference follows a rotating schedule of case presentations, didactic lectures, and research; while faculty build the schedule, the shoulder fellow handles the week-to-week administrative tasks involved in organizing it. Thursday's CORE Conference and MRI session is held jointly with the Sports fellows — the shoulder fellow is expected to attend and present on upper extremity topics, and is welcome to attend all conferences beyond that if they'd like.
Research
The fellow is expected to complete one basic science manuscript and one clinical manuscript prior to graduation, with one day per week dedicated to research.
Research Resources
Fellows have ample opportunities for research and are expected to be productive throughout the year. Available resources include:
- The HSS Shoulder Arthroplasty Registry — a rich, longitudinal clinical dataset
- A dedicated shoulder biomechanics laboratory, staffed by a collaborating PhD and research engineer, supporting biomechanical studies and device-related research
Fellows are encouraged to identify research interests early in the year so projects can be scoped, approved, and completed in time to meet the fellowship's publication requirement.
Call
The fellow will take weekend call for all attendings on the Sports/Shoulder Service. They will rotate weekends with the Sports Fellows This comes out to about 1 weekend every 8 weeks. The fellow is not expected to take ER call, but may need to evaluate patients in the ER should one of the attending’s patients presents there over their on-call weekend.
