About Dr. Pearle
Dr. Andrew D. Pearle is an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon and a pioneer in the treatment and prevention of knee injuries. Board-certified and fellowship-trained in Sports Medicine, he serves as Chief Emeritus of the Sports Medicine Institute at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. He holds the Robert and Lauren Steers Endowed Chair for Orthopedic Research and Innovation at HSS. For over two decades, Dr. Pearle has been at the forefront of knee surgery, consistently ranked among the nation's leading surgeons, including in Castle Connolly's America's Top Doctors and New York Magazine's Top Doctors.
A graduate of Amherst College and Stanford Medical School, Dr. Pearle completed his training in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at HSS, where he later served as Chief of Sports Medicine. His clinical practice centers on athletic restoration and performance preservation, with particular expertise in ACL reconstruction, robotic partial knee replacement, and sport-specific return-to-performance protocols.
Dr. Pearle has played a leading role in advancing robotic partial knee replacement, performing more than 5,000 procedures and helping to define modern surgical techniques and principles. Building on his experience, he has developed the “zero restriction” approach to robotic knee resurfacing, a surgical solution focused on preserving normal knee function, maximizing performance, and enabling patients to return to the highest level of activity possible after surgery. Today, he is Program Director of the HSS Digital Twin Platform, a first-of-its-kind personalized tool designed to further guide lifelong knee health and recovery.
Dr. Pearle is also internationally recognized for his expertise in ACL surgery. He is an active member of the ACL Study Group, an invitation-only consortium of the world's leading experts in ACL injury. Through this collaboration, he has helped define and advance contemporary surgical treatment, improve return-to-sport strategies, and drive innovations that continue to influence ACL care worldwide.
Dr. Pearle is deeply committed to keeping athletes of all ages healthy and active, spearheading local, national, and international initiatives to prevent ACL injuries before they happen. From developing neuromuscular agility programs for high school and college teams to serving as a team physician for the New York Mets for 20 years, he has made injury prevention and performance a cornerstone of his practice. Dr. Pearle has authored more than 275 peer-reviewed scientific publications, with seminal contributions to ACL surgery, robotic partial knee replacement, computer-assisted surgery, sports injury prevention, and orthopedic innovation.
Outside his practice, Dr. Pearle is a father, coach, philanthropist, lifelong athlete, and BBQ pitmaster. Whether treating a professional athlete, a weekend warrior, a teenager with a sports injury, or an active individual determined to get back in the game, he brings the same mix of expertise, compassion, and optimism to every patient he cares for.
