About Dr. Virk
Dr. Virk is an Orthopedic surgeon at The Hospital for Special Surgery specializing in spine surgery. Dr. Virk focuses on providing minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery to get his patients back to their activities of daily living with less pain. His practice focuses on shared decision making in order to provide evidence based and high quality care to his patients. At times this means surgery and other times it means getting them non-operative care to achieve their health goals.
Dr. Virk is passionate about advancing the field of spine surgery through research. He has published over 100 articles and chapters on spine surgery. His focus is on learning how muscle impacts spinal conditions, optimizing the biology of spinal fusion and exploring new technology to advance patient care. He has also been a principal investigator on a randomized controlled trial of a new stem cell therapy for treatment of chronic low back pain.
Dr. Virk received his Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then went on to the Tufts University School of Medicine for his medical degree. He completed his Orthopedic surgery residency at The Ohio State University. Finally, he did a specialized spine fellowship training at The Hospital for Special Surgery where he learned how to provide evidence-based medicinal care to treat spinal conditions using both open and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Prior to starting at The Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Virk was an Orthopedic surgeon and Assistant Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He was a leader in Minimally Invasive Surgery at Northwell, performing surgeries at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Hospital for five years before re-joining the Hospital for Special Surgery.
Dr. Virk is an active member in the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Cervical Spine Research Society, International Society for Advancement of Spine Surgery, Lumbar Spine Research Society and the North American Spine Society. He is a reviewer of scientific articles for The Spine Journal, Spine and The Global Spine Journal. He also serves on committees for the Cervical Spine Research Society and Lumbar Spine Research Society.
